Kansas' Chalmers to remain in NBA Draft

Posted: Mon Jun 16 8:15 AM

Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - Kansas guard Mario Chalmers has decided to remain in the NBA Draft and will forego his final season with the Jayhawks.

Chalmers had declared for the draft in April, but did not hire an agent and left open an option to return to school. On Sunday night, Kansas coach Bill Self said he was informed of Chalmers' decision.

"Mario informed us of his position to stay in the draft today," said Self. "Even though this was official, we anticipated this back in April when he declared without an agent. We are excited for Mario's draft prospects. From what we have gathered his stock has climbed. We wish Mario the very best and we will anxiously be waiting to see where all of our guys will be drafted."

The NBA Draft is scheduled for June 26.

"In my past five workouts, I have impressed the scouts and general managers, showing them my capabilities to have success at the next level," said Chalmers. "I have made the decision to move on and forego my senior season at Kansas."

Chalmers was the Jayhawks' second-leading scorer last season at 12.8 points per game, and its leader in three-point percentage (.468) in helping Kansas win the NCAA Tournament.

His defining moment perhaps came in the national championship game, when he made a game-tying three-pointer with 2.1 seconds left in regulation. The Jayhawks went on to beat Memphis, 75-68, in overtime.

Chalmers was named the most outstanding performer for the Final Four, adding to a list of accolades that includes three All-Big 12 selections.

"Being at Kansas has made me a better player and better person," Chalmers added. "I want to thank all the fans, the coaches and players who have helped me in my three years at KU. I will always be a Jayhawk and will come back and visit every chance I get."

Two other members of the championship team, Brandon Rush and Darrell Arthur, have also declared for the draft.
