Freeman transfers to Southern Illinois from Iowa

Carbondale, IL (Sports Network) - Former Iowa guard Tony Freeman will transfer to Southern Illinois, Salukis' men's head basketball coach Chris Lowery announced Monday.

"Tony brings maturity and toughness, which have been so consistent in our guard play in the past," Lowery said. "We've got to get our practices back to where they are really competitive, and he'll help us do that."

Freeman will sit out the 2008-09 season due to NCAA transfer rules but will be eligible to practice.

Freeman was a Third-Team All-Big Ten selection and led the Hawkeyes in scoring, averaging 13.8 points in 22 games last season. Freeman missed the first 10 games of the 2007-08 season with a fracture to the fifth metatarsal in his left foot suffered in a preseason exhibition game.

In his three-year career Freeman complied 648 points, 231 assists and 200 rebounds for the Hawkeyes.
