Xavier gives Miller 10-year extension

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Xavier University announced Wednesday that men's head basketball coach Sean Miller received a 10-year contract extension that will keep him with the school through the 2017-18 season.

Miller, who was originally hired on July 8, 2004 to replace Thad Matta, received an extension last March that ran through the 2015-16 campaign. The current deal, though, is the longest for any coach in school history.

"This agreement represents an unprecedented commitment by Xavier University to head coach Sean Miller," Xavier athletic director Mike Bobinski said. "It reflects our strong belief in Sean's leadership of our basketball program and further solidifies our mutual desire to achieve success at the highest level of Division I basketball."

This past season Miller led the Musketeers to a 30-7 mark -- a school record for wins -- and a berth in the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight. It was Xavier's third straight 20-win season and third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance, and raised Miller's career record to 93-39 in four years.

"Today's commitment reinforces my own beliefs and excitement about our future together," Miller said. "With great anticipation I look forward to continuing to build our program and the challenges that accompany doing so."

Prior to taking over as the head coach, Miller spent three seasons as the Musketeers' first-ever associate head coach and Xavier went 78-23 over that span, which included three straight 26-win seasons. The Musketeers also went 5-3 in the NCAA Tournament with Miller on the bench, which includes a trip to the 2004 Elite Eight.

The 39-year-old Miller came to Xavier after previous coaching stints at North Carolina State, Pittsburgh, Miami-Ohio and Wisconsin.
