Daytona Beach, FL (Sports Network) - On Wednesday, the National Stock Car Racing Commission heard Sprint Cup driver/owner Robby Gordon's appeal of a penalty received at Daytona in February.
After hearing from both sides, the commission gave Gordon his 100 owner and driver points back, lifted the six-week suspension of crew chief Frank Kerr, but raised the fine from $100,000 to $150,000. Kerr will remain on probation through the end of the season.
In a statement the commission said: "It notes and reaffirms the following fundamental principal which is vital to maintaining the integrity of the sport: Regardless of the source of an unapproved part on a race car, the race team that officially enters the car in a NASCAR race is ultimately accountable for that race car's conformance, or non-conformance, to the rules."
However, it also noted that "the facts presented during the hearing represented an extraordinary and unusual set of circumstances."
