Edsall agrees to five-year extension with UConn

Storrs, CT (Sports Network) - The University of Connecticut and head football coach Randy Edsall have agreed to terms on a new five-year contract that runs through the 2012 season.

The contract is effective retroactively on January 1, 2008, and pays Edsall a base salary of $275,000 -- a figure that increases by $25,000 annually throughout the contract.

Additionally, Edsall will receive $1.025 million in the first year of the contract for speaking and media appearances, and $1.05 million for those services in the second year. That figure, too, will increase annually, by $75,000.

All told, Edsall will have an annual salary of $1.5 million for the length of the contract, and will receive additional compensation if UConn reaches a bowl game.

In 2007, Edsall headed a Huskies squad that went 9-4 overall, 5-2 in the Big East, and tied for the conference championship. They also played in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, but lost, 24-10, to Wake Forest.

"Coach Edsall has done a tremendous job of elevating our football program as a member of a Bowl Championship Series conference," Connecticut director of athletics Jeff Hathaway said.

In nine seasons at UConn, Edsall has posted a 50-55 record, but oversaw the program as it moved from what was then Division I-AA to Division I-A. Edsall has led UConn to a 39-25 record in the last 64 games, as well as to the first bowl appearances in program history.

The Huskies went 8-4 in 2004 and won the Motor City Bowl, a 39-10 victory over Toledo.

"I am very appreciative to be coaching at the University of Connecticut for years to come," Edsall said. "We have been able to accomplish a lot here in nine years, but we still have work to do to achieve the consistency and goals that I am looking to obtain for this football program."
