New York, NY (Sports Network) - New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora parlayed his six-sack performance Sunday night against the Philadelphia Eagles into NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, while Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre and Arizona Cardinals return man Steve Breaston took home the offensive and special teams honors, respectively, for Week 4 of the season.
Umenyiora notched a team-record six sacks in the Giants' 16-3 victory over the Eagles, and also forced a pair of fumbles in helping limit Philadelphia to 190 yards of total offense. The six sacks equaled a career-high for Umenyiora, and also tied for the second-most in NFL single-game history. The Giants, as a team, tied the NFL single-game record by taking down Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb 12 times.
It is the first Defensive Player of the Week Award for Umenyiora in his career.
Favre completed 32 of 45 passes for 344 yards and a pair of touchdowns to pass Dan Marino for most touchdown passes in NFL history in the Packers' 23-16 win over the Minnesota Vikings. His 16-yard connection with Greg Jennings in the first quarter gave him 421 for his career to break the record. He hooked up with Greg Jones in the fourth quarter for number 422 and a 23-9 lead that ultimately provided the difference in the victory.
This marks the 12th time in his career that Favre has taken Offensive Player of the Week honors and second time this season.
Breaston provided the game-winning score for the Cardinals in their 21-14 upset of the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 73-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The rookie out of Michigan finished the day with 101 yards on punt returns and 55 kickoff-return yards on his way to the first career Player of the Week Award.
